Ranomafana is set in a magnificent montane rainforest. It has a thermal pool where one can relax before setting out for picturesque walks in the forest. Along the way there are wonderful waterfalls (Namorona) to admire.
Fianarantsoa, the capital of Fianarantsoa Province, is a commercial centre and road hub-the highland terminus of a railroad to the eastern coast. Tobacco, rice and coffee are grown in the surrounding area, which contains livestock farms and vineyards. Local industries include rice processing, beef canning, bricklaying and woodworking. The town is the site of the Mahazengy Teachers College and Tambohobe Women's College.
