Ambalavao is situated south of Fianarantsoa and is in a granite bowl. The temperature is considerably warmer as the mountain regions of Fianarantsoa disappear. It is the home of Madagascar's renowned craft paper decorated with dried flowers and leaves. The paper is used for albums, lamp shades or simply for mural display.
Horombe Plateau is a rocky expanse of land and is known as the "Door to the South". It is situated close to Isalo National Park.
Isalo National Park is dominated by sandstone rocks, eroded over time by wind and rain into weird shapes. It contains rare plantlife and a miriad of termite mounds, tiny stalagmite pinnacles and small baobab trees. Several species of lemurs live there. It is truly a magnificent national park rivalling any in the world.
